Aquamarine, also known as "sea sapphire", is a silicate mineral that belongs to the beryl family. Its chemical formula is Be3Al2Si6O18, and its crystal system is hexagonal. Aquamarine has a specific gravity between 2.67 and 2.90, a refractive index of 1.577 to 1.583, a dispersion of 0.014, and a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8.
Aquamarine is usually transparent or translucent, with a color of blue, aquamarine or turquoise, and its color is beautiful and charming. Its name is derived from the two parts of the Latin word, aqua (water) and marine (ocean), and the literal translation means "water of the ocean."
Ancient sailors believed that aquamarine would ensure safety on their voyages, so they wore it while sailing. They also believed that this gemstone would ensure their safe return to sea, so they would place aquamarine under their pillows while sleeping. Legend has it that they believed the mermaid's lower body was made of aquamarine.
The main producing areas of aquamarine include Brazil, Russia, Xinjiang, the United States, India and Pakistan. Aquamarine is the birthstone of March and the 19th anniversary gemstone.
